Experts measure intelligence in dogs in a few ways, and the smartest dog breeds might surprise you. If your dog didn’t make the top ten list, but you’re convinced of her superior intellect, don’t despair—research shows that most dogs are much smarter than we give them credit for.
The top ten canine Einsteins below all share two qualities: the ability to quickly learn new commands, and the obedience to perform the 95% of the time or better. While not every dog fits on this list, recent research shows that most dogs are much smarter than we ever knew.
Some of these dog breeds are best recognized as top guard dogs, working dogs, therapy dogs, and police dogs.
10. German Shorthaired Pointer

The Beagle comes in number 6 this year. They have made the Top Ten list every decade since the list came out in 1884. This medium-sized dog is a family favourite. 5.Bulldog
The bulldog is a calm and friendly dog. Originally bred to fight bulls in 13th century England, they are courageous dogs. The sport they were bred for was outlawed in the 19th century, so bulldog lovers worked with the breed to make them more docile and keep the breed alive. The breeders were successful, with this dog now being a popular family dog.
4. French Bulldog

2. German Shepherd Dog
The German Shepherd Dog is another breed that consistently makes the list. With their stand-up ears and bright intelligent eyes, they are beautiful dogs. They are ranked third in intelligence and are a common dog in both police and military K-9 units. Gentle with family, but courageous protectors, they also make great family dogs.
1. Labrador Retriever
Once again the Labrador Retriever comes in as Top Dog on the AKC Top Ten list. This is the 27th year as leader of the list, the longest reign in the list’s history. These beautiful dogs have three coat colours: black, chocolate, and yellow. They love to swim and play and are great companions for both children and adults. They do tend to shed and they love to eat (and eat and eat and eat. . .), but apparently, most owners feel those faults are outweighed by their good nature and fun-loving ways.
