As the name applies Nagpuri buffalo is a versatile breed of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India. The animals of this breed are very well adapted to the harsh-semi-arid conditions of Vidarbha region.

It stands better amongst the breeds of buffaloes which combine the milk and drought qualities in a better proportion in adverse climatic conditions. It is a River type buffalo. It is a central Indian Breed. The breed also called as Berari, Gaorani, Puranthadi, Varhadi, Gaolavi, Arvi, Gaolaogan, Gangauri, Shahi and Chanda. The breeding tract of this breed is Nagpur, Akola and Amrawati districts of Maharashtra.

These are a black coloured animal with white patches on the face, legs and tail. The horns are long, flat and curved, bending backwards on each side of the back. (Sword-shaped horns).

The Nagpuri buffalo breeds bullocks can be used for heavy work. The milk yield ranges from 700 to 1200 kgs per lactation. The age at first calving is 45 to 50 months and inter calving period is 450 to 550 days. The Nagpuri buffalo breeds bullocks are good for heavy trotting work but slow in movement.
