1. Banjara

Group – Greyhound

The Banjara people are the largest gypsy group in India, Banjara hound dogs were kept by these Banjara people in North India.

The Banjara hound, also known as the Vanjari, is considered a general hunting and camp or flock guard dog breed that is indigenous to North India.

This breed considered to be the general hunting breed/ camp breed/ flock guard breed in India, this breed is as speed as the greyhound and the stamina as collie.

2. Bully Kutta

Group – mastiff dog

Origin – Punjab (India & Pakistan)

Origin: Sindh, Punjab(Pakistan), Central Asia, Europe and Thanjavur (South India)

Colour: predominantly white in colour, but also fawn, brindle, brown, black can also be seen.

Breed Height: 24″-30″ tall (Smaller than Alangu)

Use: Used as a guard dog and fighting dog

3. Chippiparai Hound

Group – Hound

Origin – Chippiparai, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India

Chippiparai Dog Bred by royal families in Chippiparai in Virudhunagar district Tamil Nadu, it was kept as a symbol of royalty and dignity mostly in Tirunelveli and Madurai rulers.

The Chippiparai gets its name from the town that it was developed in.

Origin: Chippiparai in Virudhunagar district Tamil Nadu (South India)

Colour: Fawn, reddish-brown, black tinged coat, silver-grey, with very limited or no white markings

Breed Height:25 inches or 63.5 centimetres

Use: Previously It is used for hunting wild boar, deer and hare. Later It is also used for guarding the home.

4. Gaddi Kutta

Group – mastiff

Origin: western Himalayan (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kashmir)

This breed developed by Asur King Mahidant of Meerut by crossing the wild dingo-like hounds with the Sha-Khyi variety or fighting line of Tibetan Mastiffs for hunting purposes.

Height: 30 inches tall

5. Indian Spitz

Group – Spitz

Origin: The Indian Spitz was introduced in India by the British

The Indian Spitz is a spitz-type dog breed belonging to the utility group. The Indian Spitz is a domestic dog and friendly pet. There are varying standards around the world as to the ideal size of the breed, but they are always larger than their smaller cousins, the Pomeranian.

The Indian Spitz is very similar to the German Spitz, Indian Spitz was one of the most popular breeds in the late ’90s in India, This breed also often called Pomeranian, though both Indian Spitz and Pomeranian breeds are completely different. The confusion arises from the fact that both breeds belong to the Spitz family, along with the Pomeranian, Elk-Hound, German Spitz, Samoyed Dogs, Finnish Spitz, and Japanese Spitz, among others.

6. Jonangi

Origin: kolleru region of Andhra Pradesh

The Jonangi, also known as Jonangi Jagilam or Kolleti Jagilam is an Indian dog breed, majorly found in the separated state of Andhra Pradesh and also in some parts of Karnataka and all along the east coast from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu. It was once abundantly found in and around Kolleru Lake of West Godavari and Krishna Districts of Andhra Pradesh. This dog has a very short and smooth hair. It is mainly used as hunting and also as herding dog by people who have this breed.

7. Kanni

Group: hound dog

Origin: Southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

The Kanni is a rare indigenous South Indian sighthound breed of dog found in the state of Tamil Nadu. Their native breeding tract is located around villages in the Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. The breed is used mainly for coursing game. “Kanni” refers to the black and tan and black and sable varieties, while the variety which is one colour is known as the Chippiparai. However, some experts claim both Kanni and Chippiparai dogs to be distinct dogs.

8. Kombai/Combai

Group – Hound

Origin – Kombai, Tamil Nadu, India.

The Combai is a dog breed found evolved in the foothills of Western Ghats of South India. The dog is famed for its aggression and loyalty was almost driven to the brink of extinction and now has been revived in around Tamil Nadu state by dog enthusiasts and they have been instrumental in popularizing the breed in other states in India. It is considered an extremely loyal, intelligent and powerful native breed.

9. Mudhol Hound

Group – Hound

The Mudhol Hound, also known as Caravan Hound is an Indian dog breed of the sighthound type. The feathered variety is commonly referred to as a Pashmi. It is also called Karwani. It is a common pet amongst villagers in India’s Karnataka state, who use it for hunting and guarding.

The Caravan was introduced to the Deccan Plateau of western India from Central Asia and Arabia, and can thus be considered a direct descendant of the Saluki or Tāzī. This region covers parts of the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and, to a lesser degree, Telangana. The breed is popular in and around Mudhol Taluk of Karnataka and thus the breed got the name Mudhol hound.

10. Pandikona

Group – Hound

Origin – Pattikonda taluk-Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh India

The Pandikona is a primitive-type hunting dog from Pattikonda taluk-Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh India. “Pandikona” is a medium-size sighthound which is adapted to harsh climatic conditions of Kurnool district. This breed is associated with shepherd families of that region. PandiKona dogs need very little care.
This highly territorial breed is used to guard villages, property and livestock and to hunt any available game. Their territorial nature and sharp tempers often result in fights with neighbouring dogs that trespass onto its territory. Since Pandikona is a small village with overlapping property boundaries and most homes have 2 to 3 dogs, it is quite natural for dogs to posture and gets into occasional squabbles over borders.

11. Rajapalayam

Origin -Rajapalayam in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu.

The Rajapalayam is an Indian dog breed. It was the companion of the royalty and aristocracy in Southern India, particularly in its namesake town of Rajapalayam in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu.
The Rajapalayam dog is intelligent and is known to act independently without human guidance. This trait was important when dealing with large and aggressive wild boars. Despite the ban on hunting in India, the Rajapalayam has retained many of its original characteristics, making them an excellent all-round dog.

12. Rampur Hound

Origin – Rampur region of Northern India, which lies between Delhi and Bareilly.

The Rampur Greyhound is a breed of dog native to the Rampur region of Northern India, which lies between Delhi and Bareilly. The Rampur hound is a large member of the sighthound family. In North West of India, it is often described as a smooth-haired sighthound that is substantially built. It was the favoured hound of the Maharajahs for jackal control but was also used to hunt lions, tigers, leopards, and panthers. It was considered a test of courage for a single hound to take down a golden jackal. The Rampur is built to cover great distances at high speed but is also capable of great endurance.
